Materials for Pitched Roofs

Whether your roof was damaged in a storm, or it’s just time to replace your old roof, there comes a time where you need to choose the material for your new roof. Your roof is crucial to the structural integrity of your home and having to replace it is one of the biggest financial burdens a homeowner can face. With the variety of roofing materials available, it can be difficult to know what’s best for your home. SolarSesame has helped hundreds of homeowners find the right roofing material for their roof replacement.

Asphalt Shingles

Materials Warranty - 50 Years

Asphalt shingles, also known as asphalt composition shingles or composite shingles, are the most common material used for a pitched roof. They are made from a mixture of asphalt tar, fiberglass, and a granular surface coating (basically very small rocks adhered to the surface of the shingles). They are easy to install, last a long time, and look good. They can come in many different shapes, styles, textures, thicknesses, and colors.

Concrete Tiles

Materials Warranty - 50 Years

Concrete Tiles are another common material used for roofing. They are constructed from a high-strength colored concrete and fiberglass composite, which gives excellent durability and a stylish look. However, they are more difficult to install and tear-off, along with being more expensive than asphalt shingles and a lot heavier. It is not recommended to put a tile roof on a house that was not specifically built for that style of roof (there are lightweight tiles that can be used for this purpose though). Tiles can be curved, flat, Spanish-style, and just about everything in between.

Standing-Seam Metal

Materials Warranty - 50 Years

Standing-seam is a style of metal roofing that is extremely durable. The fasteners that attach the material to the roof are hidden in the seams of the material, so no amount of water or weathering can get to them and cause damage or rusting (which can be the case with other metal roofing panels). The metal used is most often a painted galvanized steel, which can come in any color. This type of roof can also be constructed from aluminum, zinc, copper, and other metal alloys. It is an extremely durable and weatherproof option that will protect your home from the elements for decades.

Stone-Coated Metal

Materials Warranty - 50 Years

Stone-Coated metal roofs are a newer innovation in the roofing materials industry. They offer the look of a shingle, shake, or tile roof while offering the durability and protection of a metal roof. Also, they are very lightweight, which is great for houses that can’t handle the weight of heavy concrete tiles. They are constructed from a stamped sheet of steel that is coated in colored rock granules.

Materials for Flat Roofs

Modified Bitumen

Materials Warranty - 25 Years

TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) is a premium flat roof product that offers superior durability and performance. A TO roofing system is constructed of a heavy-duty plastic membrane with a reinforcing scrim, and synthetic underlayment. The sheets of plastic are mechanically fastened to the roof and then hot-air welded together at the seams. TO is one of the more expensive flat roof products on the market, but the increase in lifespan makes it the best option for a roof that you can forget about for many years.

Silicone Coating

Materials Warranty - 20 Years

Silicone is a great roofing material for flat roofs. It is a bit more expensive than torch-down but lasts nearly twice as long. It is applied as a liquid coating that cures over a few days, leaving a durable, rubberized rooftop. It can be applied directly on top of many other flat roof materials, including torch-down and tar-and-gravel (with proper surface preparation). The white color reflects sunlight, which not only helps to protect the material from degradation but also keeps the roof cooler on warm, sunny days.

TPO Membrane

Materials Warranty - 10 Years (an additional layer of material can be added to bring the warranty to 15 years)

Modified Bitumen, also known as torch-down, is a common material used for flat roofs. It consists of a waterproof base sheet and a protective cap sheet. The cap sheet is heated with a torch as it is being applied to the base sheet, and the asphalt adhesive bonds the two layers together (hence the name ‘torch-down). A modified bitumen roof is the least expensive way to put up a flat roof, but it does not last as long as some other flat roofing materials.
